Mission Statement of Duval County School Counseling
To deliver a multi-layered, comprehensive, and accountable school counseling program in which equity, access, and academic success for All students is the focus.

Things You Need To Know:

#1 Stay Connected: Log-into the Parent Portal and monitor your child’s grades, test scores, missing work/assignments,attendance and more. Contact the school to obtain your login and password. Stay informed!

#2 Promotional Requirements: Promotional requirements differ depending
on the grade level. Our Student Progression Plan outlines the promotional requirements for each grade level on pages 49-52. The Student Progression Plan can be found
on the district’s website at http://www.duvalschools.org/Page/10013. If you have any questions concerning the promotional requirements for your child, please contact your child’s teacher or the school counselor for assistance.

#3 Assessments this Year! Our district has planned
on-going assessments for the students this year. These assessments will allow the teachers to better plan instruction for your child and monitor progress for individual students. Some assessments the students will be taking this year are:

CGAs-Curriculum Guide Assessments (reading, math, and science) are given in all grades. Some grade levels will take a CGA at the end of each 9 weeks for some subjects.

IReady Reading and Math—these assessments are computer based. The students are given a diagnostic test in each subject and then assigned lessons to meet the student’s needs and provide learning opportunities.

DAR—(Diagnostic Assessment for Reading) This assessment is given to select students struggling in the area of reading. This individual assessment will help identify skill deficits and assist the teacher in planning small group remediation lessons to meet the student’s needs .

STATE ASSESSMENT—The FCAT is being replaced this year by a test being developed by the American Institutes for Research. This assessment, as has been in the past with FCAT, will be for grades 3, 4, and 5 at the elementary level.

 #4 If your child is:
Struggling: Make an appointment with the teacher to talk about safety nets and resources available. Discuss developing a PMP (Progress Monitoring Plan) outlining how everyone will work to help your child remediate the skills he/she is lacking.

#5 Parent Academy: Dr. Vitti, our superintendent, has created an extensive parent academy for parents of DCPS students. Several parent workshops were available last year on topics such as Common Core 101 for Parents, Elementary Math Strategies, Test Taking Strategies That Work, Helping Your K-2 Student in Literacy, and many more. Look for additional parent workshops to be available this school year. The classes are held in various locations and are free. For more information, please check out the following link: http://dcps.duvalschools.org/Page/7398

#6 EESS/ Exceptional Education Student Services: If your child has been identified as having diverse learning needs and has an active IEP you can visit their website at http://www.duvalschools.org/Domain/4394 to gain valuable information regarding McKay Scholarships, re-evaluation procedures, promotional requirements, extended school year, and much more. No computer, no problem…gives them a call at 348-7800 for the answer to all of your questions. Also, there is a agency specifically for parents of students with diverse/special needs. The Florida Diagnostic and Learning Resources System is available as a resource for parents. Please check out their website for further information, http://www.fdlrscrown.org/

#7 Be the ONE! Empower yourself to know how to help your child. Remember, you are your child’s first and most influential teacher. Additionally, communication with the teacher will enable you to stay on top of your child’s progress. If concerns arise, early intervention can many times make a big difference.
